This is a fabulous and newly published book by a 2nd generation Italian American about the folk healing traditions passed down within her family. It contains a wealth of content! The book is divided into four parts; the origins of southern Italian folk medicine and modern adaptations, practical skills and techniques, and Materia medica. Also included are resources for further reading in both Italian and English.
In each part of the book there is such a very deep dive into so much that I find it a bit hard to express just how much is packed within these pages. Even with having no Italian roots, I enjoyed the book immensely! Anyone with Italian roots looking to reconnect with older traditions would adore this book. Though regardless of one's roots, the book is a true gem.
The first section is a historical look at western herbalism and Italian folk medicine, it examines animism, totemism, oracles, Gods, Renaissance magic, Stregheria and Benedicaria, the saints and shares various prayers and blessings.
The following section of the book is a look into practical skills and techniques, including various preparations and treatments, tools, charms, divination, and dream incubation. Dream incubation is described historically with an explanation how to approach it in a modern way. And on top of all that, there are various recipes, and spells as well.
The final part of the book, Materia Medica includes some common folk medicine plants, many of them being useful in cooking as well. I appreciated Lisa’s explanation on how to form a relationship with a plant, including researching it, it’s correspondances, it's energy, and getting to know it by using it in preparations. For each plant she explains and shares folklore, mythology, ancient uses, Italian folk medicine uses, magical uses, how to make preperations and plenty of recipes. I plan to spend a lot more time with this book, it is an amazing resource!
